Ruben Amorim's tenure at the Red Devils is considered by many to have been a notable disappointment. Looking at the numbers, his record stands out for all the wrong reasons. In the Premier League era, not a single Man Utd boss has recorded a lower points average, nor managed a standing as poor as 15th in the table. Delving further back, you have to revisit Frank O'Farrell in 1972 to find a United boss who was defeated in a greater proportion of fixtures. Additionally, he notoriously secured a place in United's annals by suffering a loss in a final to Spurs, particularly Ange Postecoglou's iteration of Tottenham.
Football, though, is not often so black and white. Regardless of the negative press of his favored system, Amorim departs from a squad in a significantly improved state than the one he found. In a prior match this term, following a victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, Welbeck reported that his colleagues were hailing United as the most impressive opposition they had played against in a long time. The football in a breathtaking four-all stalemate with AFC Bournemouth was equally hopeful and thrilling.
Although it is tough to contest the decision to sack him—especially given it was reportedly caused by his comments about superiors with even worse records—his downfall was in the end hindered by awful fortune. Had injuries to crucial personnel not coincided with the unavailability of other important individuals, he might still be in the role—perhaps even.
Therefore, the interim boss Fletcher takes over a reasonably stable state of affairs. Star players like Mount, Fernandes, and Mainoo are available again, while Diallo and Mbeumo will soon be back from the African tournament. Simply prudent husbandry of this gifted squad should be adequate to ensure a fifth-place finish and, with it, continental football for the following term—probably in the prestigious Champions League.
The home side, however, are unlikely to be a pushover. Despite boasting only twelve points and losing three of their most recent five games, their performances have at times been more impressive than the results show. Head coach Parker will surely have his side pumped up to take the game to opponents who are likely to play an lineup that has never played together, arranged in a system they have not used for a year or more.
Match begins: 8.15pm GMT.
