Exploring this Globe's Spookiest Forest: Contorted Trees, Unidentified Flying Objects and Spooky Stories in Transylvania.

"Locals dub this place a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," explains a local guide, his breath producing puffs of vapor in the cold evening air. "Countless individuals have vanished here, many believe there's a gateway to another dimension." Marius is escorting a guest on a evening stroll through frequently labeled as the world's most haunted grove: Hoia-Baciu, a section spanning 640 acres of ancient native woodland on the edges of the metropolis of Cluj-Napoca.

Hundreds of Years of Enigma

Reports of strange happenings here go back a long time – this woodland is titled for a area shepherd who is believed to have disappeared in the distant past, accompanied by two hundred animals. But Hoia-Baciu came to worldwide fame in 1968, when a defense worker named Emil Barnea took a picture of what he claimed was a UFO hovering above a round opening in the heart of the forest.

Countless ventured inside and vanished without trace. But no need to fear," he states, addressing his guest with a grin. "Our guided walks have a 100% return rate."

In the decades since, Hoia-Baciu has brought in yogis, traditional medicine people, ufologists and supernatural researchers from across the world, eager to feel the strange energies believed to resonate through the forest.

Modern Threats

It may be a top global hotspots for lovers of the paranormal, this woodland is facing danger. The western districts of Cluj-Napoca – a contemporary technology center of a population exceeding 400,000, described as the Silicon Valley of the region – are encroaching, and developers are advocating for approval to cut down the woods to erect housing complexes.

Except for a small area home to locally rare oak varieties, the forest is lacking legal protection, but Marius is confident that the organization he co-founded – the Hoia-Baciu Project – will contribute to improving the situation, persuading the government officials to recognise the forest's significance as a travel hotspot.

Eerie Encounters

As twigs and fall foliage split and rustle beneath their boots, Marius describes numerous traditional stories and alleged ghostly incidents here.

  • A well-known account recounts a little girl disappearing during a group gathering, then to rematerialise after five years with no recollection of her experience, showing no signs of aging a single day, her attire shy of the slightest speck of soil.
  • Regular stories describe smartphones and photography gear mysteriously turning off on entering the woods.
  • Feelings include full-blown dread to feelings of joy.
  • Some people state seeing unusual marks on their bodies, detecting unseen murmurs through the trees, or experience palms pushing them, despite being convinced they're by themselves.

Scientific Investigations

Although numerous of the stories may be impossible to confirm, there are many things clearly observable that is undeniably strange. All around are trees whose trunks are warped and gnarled into unusual forms.

Different theories have been suggested to clarify the misshapen plants: strong gales could have bent the saplings, or inherently elevated electromagnetic fields in the soil explain their strange formation.

But formal examinations have found no satisfactory evidence.

The Legendary Opening

The guide's excursions enable participants to participate in a modest investigation of their own. As we approach the meadow in the trees where Barnea photographed his well-known UFO images, he passes the visitor an electromagnetic field detector which measures energy patterns.

"We're venturing into the most energetic section of the forest," he says. "Try to detect something."

The plants immediately cease as the group enters into a flawless round. The sole vegetation is the low vegetation beneath our feet; it's clear that it's naturally occurring, and looks that this unusual opening is wild, not the creation of people.

Between Reality and Imagination

The broader region is a area which stirs the imagination, where the border is unclear between truth and myth. In traditional settlements superstition remains in strigoi ("screamers") – otherworldly, appearance-altering creatures, who rise from their graves to haunt regional populations.

The novelist's well-known fictional vampire is forever associated with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – a medieval building located on a stone formation in the Transylvanian Alps – is heavily promoted as "the vampire's home".

But including legend-filled Transylvania – literally, "the territory after the grove" – feels real and understandable versus the haunted grove, which seem to be, for factors related to radiation, environmental or entirely legendary, a nexus for creative energy.

"Within this forest," Marius states, "the line between fact and fiction is very thin."
